Pulled Pork is an American dish, normally served at barbecues, using boneless pork shoulder, that is then smoked using either wood, or a slow cooker. Once cooking is complete, the meat is then shredded and coated in barbecue sauce..

Barbecue is a type of sauce often used as a marinade, basting, condiment, or topping for meat that is prepared using the barbecue cooking style. Meats that are often paired with this sauce include pork, beef, and chicken. Ingredients used in this sauce vary depending on the recipe.

Ingredients for Pulled Pork

For the Pork's seasoning, you will need one tablespoon each of ground cumin, black pepper, smoked paprika, brown sugar, and salt. For the pork itself, you only need four and a half pounds, or two kilograms of boneless pork shoulder. The marinade is made using ten fluid ounces of cider.

To make the barbecue sauce, you will need nine ounces of tomato ketchup for the base. You will also need three and a half tablespoons of white wine vinegar and dark brown sugar. Also required will be one tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce, half a tablespoon of mustard powder, a tablespoon of smoked paprika. The final ingredient for the sauce, is milled black pepper.

First, preheat the oven to 275 degrees Farenheit, or 140 degrees Celsius. Next, mix the spices, sugar, and salt using a bowl. Afterwards, rub the mixture onto the pork until it is fully covered, then place the seasoned pork inside a casserole dish, pour in the cider, and place a lid or sheet of tin foil on top of the dish, then cook for approximately five hours until the pork starts to fall apart. Once the pork is ready, gently remove it from the casserole dish and place it on a tray, before skimming any excess fat from the juices left in the dish. Next, you will add the barbecue sauce made in paragraph two to the juices, and then mix. The final steps are to shred the pork using a few forks, whilst removing any fatty bits of the meat, before mixing it with the BBQ sauce.

To make the BBQ sauce, start by placing all of the ingredients into a medium saucepan, which will be brought to a steady simmer over low heat. Once the sugar has fully dissolved, slightly raise the heat and boil for 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, remove the sauce from the heat and leave it to cool.

Uses for Pulled Pork

Pulled pork has a wide variety of uses, ranging from toppings to the main ingredient of a sandwich. There are so many dishes that can be enhanced by adding pulled pork, and in the next paragraph, you will see some examples.

Pulled pork can be used as a substitute for meat in a burger, or as an additional topping. It can also be used in Mexican dishes like tacos, nachos, and quesadillas. Pulled pork can even be used as a pizza topping, or a topping for potato wedges. You can also use pulled pork in macaroni and cheese.
